WHAT IS BHARATHANATYAM

The word BHA-RA-THA-NATYAM
stands for Bhava, Raga, Thala.
Bhava – Means expression
Raga – Means music
Thala – Means rhythm.

Bharatanatyam is a major form of Indian classical dance that originated in the state of Tamil Naadu.

It is the oldest classical dance tradition of India. The theoretical foundations of the Indian classical dance laid out in Natya Shastra. It can be traced to various ancient art forms including Bharatanatyam.

Bharatanatyam has many dimensions. They include body movements, facial expressions, hand gestures, footwork, costumes, music, repertoire and themes of performance. Because Bharatanatyam is well developed, all these aspects of the art have been codified, and are documented in ancient scriptures as well as in recent books.

Today, this art form is one of the most popular and widely performed dance styles and is practiced all over the world. The dancer (female or male) uses the space as her/his own holy temple and brings the audience into her/his magical circle as she/he performs and acts out stories, tales, and stories with emotional content. A perfect balance of the body, eloquent of expression, and accuracy of footwork to intricate mathematical rhythms are the hallmarks of this dance.

TEACHING METHODS

BHARATANATYAM- BASIC STEPS FOR BEGINNERS

All great performers will be great teachers too. One must have an aptitude for teaching, patience and the skill of initiation to train kids and others who are new to it. Every classical dance form is different but ultimately the intention of all is the same. If you are given the proper guidance from a knowledgeable Guru, it doesn’t matter what dance form you are learning…

Bharatanatyam has three distinct streams or aspects:

Nritta
Means pure dance steps or dance sequences that are performed rhythmically. These movements and gestures do not convey any mood or thought. Their sole purpose is to create beauty. Adavus, which are the basic steps in Bharatanatyam, form the basic component of Nritta.

Nrittya
Involves interpretation and is the mime that corresponds to the song accompanied by music and song. This aspect of Bharatanatyam involves showing emotions, sentiments and conveys a message through steps, movements, and gestures.

Natya
Is the art of storytelling through dance. Natya is the dramatic representation and the technique involved here is called “Abhinaya”. The dancer through steps, gestures, movements, and expressions, enacts a storyAs mentioned before Adavus are the initial steps in Bharatanatyam which form the basic component of Nritta.

WHAT IS ARANGETRAM

Arangetram is an on-stage performance of a student of Indian classical dance. This first solo performance follows years of training.

The word Aragetram is derived from the Tamil language; particularly the words Arangu, which translates to ‘the stage’ and Etram, which means ‘rice to the performance’.

A Bharatanatyam arangetram marks a dancers successful completion of a series of dance, a full margam. It is also considered to be a dancers eligibility to give performances.

The arangetram day itself is an auspicious occasion where the dancer ascends the stage to showcase their talent to the audience, their loved one, friends and family. It is a day where the student is recognized for their timeless devotion learning the art. It is a testimony to the perseverance, commitment, and passion for Bharatanatyam.

The Arangetram is an old tradition, which marks the pathway for a dancer to then perform alone or be able to give training to other dancers. Once a dancer has completed training, he or she should have an understanding of classical music and the many aspects of dancing.
