WHAT IS ARANGETRAM
Arangetram is an on-stage performance of a student of Indian classical dance. This first solo performance follows years of training.
The word Aragetram is derived from the Tamil language; particularly the words Arangu, which translates to ‘the stage’ and Etram, which means ‘rice to the performance’.
A Bharatanatyam arangetram marks a dancers successful completion of a series of dance, a full margam. It is also considered to be a dancers eligibility to give performances.
The arangetram day itself is an auspicious occasion where the dancer ascends the stage to showcase their talent to the audience, their loved one, friends and family. It is a day where the student is recognized for their timeless devotion learning the art. It is a testimony to the perseverance, commitment, and passion for Bharatanatyam.
The Arangetram is an old tradition, which marks the pathway for a dancer to then perform alone or be able to give training to other dancers. Once a dancer has completed training, he or she should have an understanding of classical music and the many aspects of dancing.
